Call of Duty: Black Ops II remains one of the series' most ambitious packages, combining a branching near-future campaign, excellent competitive maps, flexible loadouts, and foundational Zombies modes. Its online population and security situation require caution, but the core design still holds up.

Black Ops II moves between Cold War operations and a 2025 conflict shaped by drones, cyberwarfare, and Raul Menendez. The campaign gives players choices that affect missions, character survival, and the ending, an unusual amount of flexibility for Call of Duty. Strike Force missions add small tactical objectives, though their friendly AI and controls are less polished than the main shooting.

Multiplayer introduced the Pick 10 loadout system, allowing players to trade equipment, perks, attachments, and weapons against a shared point budget. That freedom, combined with readable maps such as Raid and Standoff, supports aggressive, defensive, and objective-focused styles. Scorestreaks reward helping the team rather than counting kills alone.

Zombies is equally important. Tranzit experimented with a connected map and bus travel, while later maps such as Mob of the Dead and Origins developed more focused quests and environments. Some modes and mechanics have aged unevenly, and official PC matchmaking for an older game can expose players to low populations or security concerns.

Private matches with trusted players are the safer option. Black Ops II is still worth revisiting for its campaign structure and influential multiplayer ideas, but buyers should not assume its public online environment matches a current release.

In the campaign, use cover, prioritize ranged threats, and review mission challenges before choosing equipment. Decisions and optional objectives can alter later events, so avoid skipping prompts and expect multiple runs if you want different endings. Strike Force missions allow switching between units and a tactical overview; issue simple focused orders rather than relying on several AI squads at once.

For multiplayer, build a Pick 10 class around one role. Spend points on attachments and perks that support the chosen weapon instead of filling every traditional slot. Play objectives to earn scorestreaks faster, learn common sightlines, and avoid sprinting through predictable choke points.

In Zombies, keep moving, gather enemies into a manageable train, and leave one slow zombie alive when the team needs time to buy equipment or solve map tasks. Use private lobbies with trusted players where possible. On older PC versions, investigate current community security guidance before entering public matchmaking.
