Description

Borderlands 3 offers the series' best gun handling, movement, weapon variety, and flexible Vault Hunter builds across several planets. Its combat is excellent and endgame generous, but noisy writing, weak villains, technical clutter, and frequent inventory work undermine the campaign.

Borderlands 3 Review

Borderlands 3 expands the looter-shooter beyond Pandora as four new Vault Hunters pursue the Calypso Twins and their cult. The story travels through distinct planets, introducing new factions, enemies, and environments. Its villains and comedy are far less effective than Handsome Jack, and long conversations often continue after the player has already understood the objective.

Mechanically, the sequel is a major improvement. Shooting feels sharper, sliding and mantling make movement smoother, and manufacturers produce genuinely different weapon behaviors. Each Vault Hunter has multiple action skills and broad skill trees, supporting pets, elemental effects, gadgets, shield builds, splash damage, and many hybrids.

Cooperative scaling and instanced loot reduce arguments between players of different levels. The constant reward stream is exciting until the inventory fills with near-duplicate guns. Visual effects can obscure enemies, menus have performance issues on some platforms, and balance changes or Mayhem modifiers make the endgame difficult to read without outside research.

The campaign's pacing suffers whenever combat stops for dialogue or repeated travel. Borderlands 3 is easiest to recommend for the act of playing it: movement, gun feedback, bosses, and build experimentation are excellent. Players primarily invested in story or restrained humor may prefer earlier entries, while loot-focused groups can spend hundreds of hours refining characters.

How to Play Borderlands 3

Choose a Vault Hunter and test the available action skills before committing heavily to one tree. Skill points can create strong interactions, so read how bonuses affect pets, elements, shields, grenades, or specific weapon types. Respec when a build no longer supports the gear being used.

Carry weapons for several ranges and health types. Manufacturer behavior matters: some guns switch modes, throw on reload, grow stronger while firing, or use alternate ammunition. Use sliding and mantling to keep moving through arenas, and aim for enemy weak points rather than trading damage in place.

Compare loot selectively. Mark unwanted items as junk and sell in batches, keeping only weapons that improve a build or fill a missing role. In co-op, use cooperation settings for individual loot and level scaling.

Approach Mayhem and endgame activities after completing the campaign, then raise difficulty gradually while replacing gear at the new power level.
